The Beacons Are Lit!
I'm a big fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I want to help you see some spiritual aspects from LOTR (that's how the cool kids type it) that you can apply to your life. Let's get after it!
Allow me to set the scene: In LOTR: Return of the King, Suaron and Saruman are two bad dudes who are out to destroy the world of men. Like, forever. They've sent out these evil, nasty things called Uruk-hai to wreak havoc all across Middle Earth. To kill every single man, woman, and child they encounter. But Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, Gandalf and crew ain't goin' out like that.
Aragorn comes frantically running into the throne room of King Theoden of Rohan. He screaming and yelling as he runs to King Theoden and says, "The Beacons of Minas Tirith! The Beacons Are Lit! Gondor calls for aid!" King Theoden pauses to ramp up the tension and ultimately, the effectiveness of the movie moment. Then he says to Aragorn and all those listening, "And Rohan will answer!" Boom! It's on like Donkey Kong!
Dope, right? It gets even better when you consider this: There was some bad blood between Rohan and Gondor from way back when. Kind of like the enmity between God and man before Jesus Christ came into the world (See Ephesians 2.16, 2 Corinthians 5.18-19, Romans 5.10, Colossians 1.20). So to have King Theoden say, "Yep, we 'bout to ride for Gondor!" is a pretty big deal.
This happens, because someone lit the beacons. Because someone started a fire.
Do you know that every time you pray, you light the beacon that is your faith? The beacon, if you will, of God's heart. Every time you pray, He hears you. You start a fire! Peep these bars:
Psalm 91.15 He shall call upon me and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honour him.
Isaiah 58.9 Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am...
Isaiah 65.24 And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
I know sometimes it seems like your prayers aren't being heard, let alone answered. I feel like that too, sometimes! It's like an eternal, real-life pinball game: you pray and your prayers just perpetually bounce off the walls. But isn't it great that that's not true?!
Not only does God hear you, He answers you! How cool is that?! All because you lit the beacons. Let me encourage you today to keep lighting the beacons. That is, keep praying. Don't give up. Persist in prayer. It works. Remember, this is God "...who cannot lie." (Titus 1.2).
Every time you open your mouth to pray, you win. You may not get exactly what you want, but you'll get what you need.
WordTalk Wisdom: Keep praying. Don't give up. When you pray: The Beacons Are Lit!
