All The King's Men

All The King's Men

Reading the title of this post, you may have just thought of Humpty Dumpty. If  that's not you, you maybe you thought of the movie, All The King's Men (1949 and 2006). Either way, you're on the right track. The phrase came to mind as I was reading Daniel 6.

In short, Daniel had it going on! He was "...preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him..." (Dan. 6.3). The verse goes on to say that the king was going to put Daniel in charge of the whole kingdom! Now, that's the kind of favor I'm talking about! Before we move on, though, look at how he got there: an excellent spirit was in him. Is there excellence in you? Now, that'll teach! I'll save that for another post.

Daniel was highly favored and respected by King Darius. Of course, this made some folk jealous. If they were minding their own business and working towards having an excellent spirit like Daniel, they would have been blessed and found favor too. In fact, as they searched for things to blame Daniel for and find fault in him, they found nothing. Except this one thing.

They said, "Man, Daniel is spotless, yo. We ain't got nuttin' on him. Except when it comes to the law of his God." (Daniel 6.4-5). Can't you just hear them laughing maniacally? Snickering like Muttley and triple drattin' it up like Dick Dastardly. In the midst of their snickering and drattin', they scheme and plot and come up with a plan get Daniel hemmed up and they take it to the king.

They said, "King, peep this. Anyone who prays to any god or human during the next thirty days, except to you, they will be thrown in the lions' den." The king said, "Word to Big Bird." and he signed the decree. Cool, right? Not in Daniel's eyes.

Daniel 6.10 "Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime."

Well, well, well. Look at Daniel. The king signed the decree, so it's off to the lions' den with him. You can read the rest when you click here.

Today, what I need you to get is this: always mind your surroundings and beware of all the king's men. They may smile in your face. They may work beside you. Y'all may have high ranking positions in business together. You may live with them. But if you're the one who's found favor with the "king" in your place of work, in your neighborhood, in chess club, or wherever, they're coming for you, like the Bad Boys song. Do you know what ya gonna do when they or Big Papa come for you?!

If you're like Daniel, you sure do. You're going to talk to God like you always do and He's going to take care of you and the situation you're facing at home, work, in business, or in your life. Like He always does.

So yeah, always mind your surroundings and keep your eyes on all the king's men.

But more than that. Keep your eyes on the King.
